- Dr. Sylvan S. Mintz is an Orofacial Pain, TMJ and Dental Sleep Medicine specialist serving the Bethesda area for the past 17 years. After graduating from the University of Maryland as a general dentist, then serving two years in the Army with a year tour in Vietnam, he went on to become a pediatric dentist serving Southern Maryland for over 30 years. An interest in TMJ led him to obtain additional education at Rutgers Dental School and then limit his practice as a TMJ specialist. Dr. Mintz is the only dentist in MD, DC, and VA board certified by both the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Mintz is currently a regular consultant to the Orofacial Pain clinic at Walter Reed National Medical Center, active staff (holds an academic advisor position) at the National Children’s Hospital Sleep Center, is on the Deans faculty at the Maryland Dental School, and an assistant professor at GW Medical School in the department of Pediatrics. Dr. Mintz just published an article in “Sleep and Breathing” a 14-year case study of over 500 patients using sleep appliances. He lectures extensively.

Provided by Doctor.comAfter seeing multiple TMJ doctors for jaw pain, Dr. Mintz was the first to diagnose my problem accurately. It was caused by Sleep Apnea. With his expert diagnosis and treatment, I'm on the way to healing and sleeping.

Provided by Doctor.comDr. Mintz listened to the problems I was having with my jaw and was able to correct my issue so that I no longer experience pain. He made a night mouth guard and carefully fit it onto my teeth so that it prevented night grinding of my teeth. Dr. Mintz cares about his patients. I never feel rushed. I can't imagine seeing anyone else for my TMJ.

Provided by Doctor.comToday was my first visit to see Dr. Mintz for evaluation of my obstructive sleep apnea. When I arrived in the office, I was warmly greeted by the office staff, my blood pressure was taken and I reviewed an excellent patient education video presented by Dr. Mintz. Dr. Mintz explained the etiology and management of obstructive sleep apnea and the process for evaluation including the types of dental devices. Dr. Mintz performed very comprehensive exam, very gentle, outstanding explanation.

After my daughter suffered locked jaw, a different specialist pushed drastic measures, was unwilling to answer questions, and made my daughter fearful of the dentist. Fortunately we found Dr. Mintz for a second opinion and his more cautious approach gave her steady improvement and his gentle manner took away anxiety.
