Birmingham Quick Guide
Present-day Birmingham is synonymous with “American Idol” winners Ruben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks, and formidable season four runner up-Bo Bice, who hails from nearby Helena. But the “Magic City” was on the map as a place of interest decades before these native sons crooned their way into the limelight and into America’s living rooms, thus putting the “205” on everyone’s radar, including that of Partners for Livable Communities, a non-profit organization that has counted Birmingham among “America’s Most Livable Communities.” The Birmingham story is rich with history, from its earliest beginnings as the “Pittsburgh of the South” (a moniker that pays homage to it’s industrial roots in iron and steel) to its pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, to today’s Birmingham, the “Diverse City,” which has an economy driven by banking and healthcare. Birmingham’s City Hall is located at 710 North 20th St. The Chamber of Commerce is located a few blocks away at 505 North 20th St. Both offices have a wealth of useful information available to help residents navigate city agencies and services.
