To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Dr. Smith-Winton earned her undergraduate degree from Delaware State University where she majored in Biology and also played Division One basketball. She attended medical school at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, OH where she earned her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Smith-Winton’s postgraduate studies included extensive three-year reconstructive foot and ankle surgical and clinical training at Inspira Health Network in Vineland, NJ as well as deformity correction at The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
Wound Care
Wound care is particularly important for those with diabetes. It’s possible that what appears to be a small wound could turn into more severe foot complications down the road if left untreated. It’s common for those with diabetes to experience neuropathy. Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that affects the body and can cause you to lose feeling in the feet. If you’re no longer experiencing feeling in your feet and a wound develops, it’s very possible it may go unnoticed if you don’t check your feet daily.

Bunions
A bunion is a bone deformity usually occurring at the base of the big toe. This is a progressive condition that is made worse by inward pressure from tight shoes. Bunions can be very painful, and in some instances surgery may be necessary to remove them.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail develops when your nail curves and grows into the flesh of your toe instead of straight out. Ingrown toenails are usually painful and can become infected without treatment. This podiatric condition is most likely to occur on your big toe but can present on any toe.
Reconstructive Surgery
Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Corns
Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.
Ulcer
A diabetic foot ulcer is an open wound on your foot that doesn’t heal and increases your risk of serious infection. This condition is the leading cause of non-trauma-related amputations. Left untreated, infections can spread through your foot, leg, and even further.
Calluses
The main sign of a bunion is the lump that forms on the side of your foot. It’s often red, and your skin may look shiny. You may also develop calluses or corns on the side of your foot and big toe that rub against the inside of your shoe. You can also develop calluses on the parts of your big and first toe that rub together.
Fungus
The area of the toes is generally warm and damp, unfortunately making it a great area for fungus to grow. If left untreated, the fungal infection can spread, which is why it’s so important to get professional help early on and look into your treatment options.

Pain felt on the outside of the foot is termed lateral pain, and there are many causes. The most common cause of lateral foot pain is a sprained ankle, which is responsible for about 85 percent of lateral foot injuries. When the anterior talofibular, or ATFL, ligament is overstretched, it can be torn or, in severe cases, ruptured. This injury causes pain, swelling, bruising, and instability. If an ankle sprain is not fully healed and rehabbed, it can become a chronic condition. Overuse by runners is another cause of pain on the outside of the foot. It can result in hairline fractures in the bones of the feet, including the fifth metatarsal. Because continuing the activity can lead to breaking the bone, resting the foot for about six weeks is suggested. A third cause of pain on the outside of the foot is termed peroneal tendinosis. Repetitive use of the ankle and improper footwear are the main causes of irritation to this tendon. Resting the leg can help it to heal, and in some cases, surgery is a treatment option. For help with pain on the outside of the foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Achilles Tendonitis
There are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.
Ankle Sprain
Ankle pain, while initially thought of as an issue for athletes, can affect anyone at anytime. Simple, everyday activities, such as walking or running on an uneven surface, have the possibility of causing serious harm to one’s ankle. That is, however, not to discount athletic injuries; in fact, half of all ankle sprains are inflicted during an athletic activity. The most common causes of ankle injuries include tripping or falling, landing awkwardly after jumping, a sudden impact such as a car crash, or twisting, rolling, and rotating of the ankle.

Fungus Toenails
Fungal infections occur due to fungus getting through the cracks of the toes or cuts in your skin. Common signs that you may have a fungal infection include thicker than normal toenails, oddly shaped toenails, discoloration, a yellowish hue to the nail, and separation of the nail and nail bed. Fungal infections can affect anyone but are most common among men, those with diabetes or athlete’s foot, and smokers. The risk of having toenail fungus also increases as you age, if another family member has it, and if you have a weaker immune system.
Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a relatively common deformity where your toe bends abnormally. This podiatric condition most often develops on your second or third toes and be quite painful.
Heel Spurs
A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

If you have an ingrown toenail, your scheduled visit with Dr. Mbanuzue to address an ingrown toenail is likely to include the following steps. First, she first thoroughly numbs your toe with a local anesthetic. Then, she cuts away the part of your toe growing abnormally. Next, she applies medication and carefully bandages your toe.

Metatarsalgia
Dance is a beautiful art form, but it can take a toll on the dancer’s feet. Foot injuries are common among dancers because of the repetitive and high-impact movements involved. One foot injury that many dancers experience is metatarsalgia or pain and inflammation in the balls of the feet. This condition can result from a variety of things, including excessive flexibility, repetitive stress on the metatarsal bones, improper technique, and inadequate footwear. A dancer can practice prevention techniques to maintain their health and the quality of their performance. Resting and strengthening the muscles on the bottom of the feet often help with inflammation and pain. An example of an exercise that is useful is toe scrunches, which involves pulling a towel across the floor inward with the toes. Adding cushioning to dance shoes and orthotics to regular shoes might reduce the damage this ailment has on the feet. If you are a dancer and are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an examination and treatment.

Repetitive motions can also cause tension and microtears in your soft tissue that lead to inflammation and pain. Heel pain and plantar fasciitis are common sports-related conditions and occur where tightness in your calf and Achilles tendon pulls on the fascia on the bottom of your foot.
