With clinical interests in complex systemic erythematosus lupus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, ankylosing spondylopathy, as well as other autoimmune diseases and rare immune-deficiency diseases, she has authored more than 30 professional reports peer-reviewed articles and two prestige rheumatology books. Dr. Li is especially passionate about her research in Lupus pathogenesis, in particular, SLE related dysfunction of T cells, B cells and the monocytes. Dr. Li has been selected to give plenary oral presentations at several international meetings including the Annual Meeting of American College of Rheumatology and the Annual Meeting of American Association of Immunology.
Fibromyalgia
Is a syndrome characterized by widespread pain, thought to be related to abnormalities in how signals are processed in the central nervous system. However, the cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown. Medical treatment is helpful, but patients must perform aerobic exercise and obtain adequate rest. Medications typically include cymbalta, lyrica, savella, and/or muscle relaxants.
Medical Weight Loss
Is a progressive bone disease characterized by a decreased bone mass, which may lead to fractures. This can be age-related, by may also be related to medications, such as prednisone, thyroid disease, malnutrition, weight loss surgery, and smoking tobacco. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (a DEXA scan) is used to evaluate the bone mineral density of a patient. Treatment includes calcium and vitamin d supplementation, weight bearing exercise, and medication, such as prolia, reclast, fosamax, boniva, or actonel.

Laura is an active member of the community, having served in the past on Board of Directors of the local YWCA. She is currently a volunteer for Garden Pathways Tattoo Removal Program, partnering with Adventist Health Bakersfield to perform this service to assist those needing tattoo removal to help get their life back in order. The rheumatologist helps a primary care physician to evaluate the patient’s problem, make a diagnosis, and plan a course of treatment. In many cases, your primary care physician may request a consultation with a rheumatologist to manage inflammatory diseases, though you would continue to follow with your primary care physician for your regular medical needs.

Dr. Bacon has drawn on his medical and psychiatric training in rheumatologic conditions. He has presented at regional, state, and international conferences and has given lectures to medical students and residents. He is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, the California Rheumatology Alliance, the American Medical Association and the American College of Osteopathic Internists. In service to his community, he has served as an educational speaker to state-level allied medical groups, volunteered as a patient educator for arthritis foundation activities, served as a counselor in smoking cessation group therapy, and testified as an expert witness in civil commitment hearings. Dr. DiCarlo is originally from the Bay Area of California. She attended Cal State University Humboldt for undergraduate studies in cellular-molecular biology. Her medical education was attained at the University of Santos Thomas, Manila, Philippines, where she received her degree, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. She completed her residency and internship in internal medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Clayton was born in Eugene, Oregon and was raised in McMinnville, Oregon until he moved to Bakersfield, California in 2002. He graduated from the Registered Nursing program at Bakersfield College in 2010 and worked in nursing positions including ICU and Emergency Medicine. He also worked as a life flight nurse with Hall Ambulance Critical Care Transport Helicopter Team. He continued his education and received a Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing from Walden University in 2015. Upon graduation from the Nurse Practitioner program, he became a certified Family Nurse Practitioner in the state of California. He worked in Internal Medicine/ Primary Care as a practitioner which also included ER and wound care. Since 2018, he has worked at Rheumatology Services Medical Group.

Psoriasis
Is an inflammatory joint disease related to the skin disease psoriasis. In most patients, the skin symptoms pre-date joint pain by several years. However, in some cases, the arthritis can present prior to skin manifestations. This disease can result in multiple swollen and tender joints with deformity. Treatment begins with disease modifying antirheumatic drugs, such as methotrexate. Frequently, patients must advance to biologic medications, which are administered by injections or with intravenous infusions given in our office.

Physical Therapy
Is a mechanical abnormality involving degradation of joints. Patients experience a loss of articular cartilage, which results in pain and a decreased range of motion. Typical symptoms are joint pain that is worse with activity, tenderness, locking, and clicking. Treatment generally involves a combination of physical therapy, pain medication, orthotic devices, injections, and even surgery in severe cases.
