After residency, Dr. Mooers completed a fellowship specializing in high volume bariatric and metabolic surgery including revisions, conversions, and emergency procedures. His mentors were Drs John Zografakis and Adrian Dan at Summa Health System - Akron City Hospital in Akron, OH. Dr. Mooers was honored by the ASMBS and SAGES with triple certification in Advanced Gastrointestinal Minimally Invasive Surgery, Foregut Surgery, and Bariatric Surgery. He has also completed additional training in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and with Intuitiveâ€™s robotic assisted surgery platform, Da Vinci.

Ultrasound
The doctor can usually diagnose a hernia by physical examination (for example: for inguinal hernia, a lump can be seen or felt in the groin).Ultrasound and X-rays are other tests that your doctor can order to diagnose hernia.
MRI
An MRI of the stomach is taken after the patient has eaten a meal. This has not been effectively studied so no right way of doing the test has been determined yet. The MRI is very accurate in measuring stomach volume and emptying. However use of MRI to measure gastric emptying is limited due to the amount of imaging time it takes to measure gastric emptying and the limited time and availability of MRI machines.

General Surgery
Dr. Mooers attended medical school and completed general surgery residency at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. During medical school he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor society for excellence in clinical care and as Chief Resident was awarded resident teacher of year by the medical school. Dr. Mooers developed an interest in Bariatric Surgery due to the efficacy of interventions, which cure type two diabetes, ameliorate cardiovascular disease associated with obesity, and prolong and improve the quality of patientsâ€™ lives. While at the University of Iowa, Dr. Mooers trained under colleagues of Dr. Mason, who is considered the grandfather of modern bariatric surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
His surgical residency training was in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Minneapolis, Minnesota with a research project in arteriovenous fistula. He later did advanced training in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics in New York and Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, he was mentored by Dr. Daniel Cottam. He has also sought extensive additional training in Flexible Endoscopy, Colon surgery, and Hernia surgery.
Laparoscopy
The benefits of laparoscopy are smaller incisions, faster healing, a more rapid recovery, shorter rehabilitation period, and less scarring. It is often performed on an outpatient basis and the patient is able to return home on the same day.

Plastic Surgeons

Laparoscopic Surgery
Port site herniation is an uncommon event that usually occurs as a result of incomplete fascial closure. This allows the omentum or viscera to herniate through the incompletely closed defect. However, in laparoscopic surgery for morbid obesity, the omentum and viscera can herniate through the thick preperitoneal space even with a complete closure of the fascia.
Bariatric Surgery
Most of the time, bariatric surgery is successful—people lose weight and maintain a new, healthier lifestyle. However, in some cases, patients find that the procedure deteriorates over time or is no longer effective for a variety of reasons. Revision surgery can help.

Ulcer
A vagotomy is where the surgeon cuts the Vagus nerve, a nerve that connects to the stomach. This is intentionally done to help those with peptic ulcer disease in some cases and is sometimes inadvertently done in other abdominal surgeries. It is not likely for this to cause gastroparesis but it does sometimes because communication between the stomach and the brain is impaired.
