Flu Shots
Doubters of vaccine efficacy are circulating a message that the vaccines do not work, as evidenced by the recommendation that even more vaccine doses will be needed because the old ones are ineffective. Arresting this pandemic is like building an airplane while we are flying in it. It is not easy and not every therapy will be perfect. We may require new vaccines every 6 months or so to keep ahead of it. But so what? Isn’t it worth getting a shot to prevent another 5 million deaths around the world and the constant threat of worldwide economic collapse? No one seems to object to yearly flu shots, though they are about 1/5 as effective as the mRNA Covid vaccines.
Immunizations
We are seeing the beginning of the end of this pandemic, just in time for the holidays. Case numbers are coming down around the country, as additional individuals decide (or are mandated) to get vaccinated, vulnerable vaccinated individuals get booster shots, and millions of people recover from recent infections from the Delta variant, with robust immunity to the virus. The vaccinated and the unvaccinated survivors of the virus who are now immune, remain. And the departed, well they will remain departed. By the end of the year, about 800,000 people in the United States will have died from Covid-19. The last 20,000 deaths, which have occurred since the summer, were almost entirely unnecessary, preventable by vaccination.

We provide treatment for such common conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, acute conditions like sinusitis or respiratory infections, as well as preventative care. We share the “antiquated” belief that good medicine cannot be practiced in a five-minute office visit and believe that the extra time spent with patients helps us avoid ordering excessive testing and prescribing unnecessary medications. When tests are needed, we can perform a wide range of them in the office including pulmonary function testing, cardio-vascular disease screening and phlebotomy.

Some think this number may be inflated. But even if that is so, it does not take into account deaths related to delayed care, fear of going to the emergency room with an acute illness, delayed screening tests, and mental health crises. Deaths in the United State exceeded by 4 times the initial worst case scenario estimates of 250,000 deaths, predicted 2 years ago. We will feel the effects of this pandemic on the way we work, play, and live for many years to come.
